Our Story

Carpe Noctem, is a small and reliable business originally setup to provide Lighting, Sound and Stage solutions to the people of the UK. The business was setup in January 2020 by David Coull, a 20 year old student who was soon to graduate at the University of Derby with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Technical Theatre. The business was setup in Derbyshire; a central location to the rest of England and the UK.

Original thoughts and ideas of setting up his own business came about when discussions at University enabled thoughts about what David wanted to do with his future, creating ambitions and goals that David wanted to strive to achieve. He knew that a venture such as this would coincide with his freelance work as a lighting Designer & Technician. After several weeks of reasoning with the idea, the perfect opportunity arose when a similar local business went into retirement, selling off all of their equipment. This formed some of the basic foundations for building the business.

It was whilst working on a 2019 pantomime of Cinderella, that the idea for the business became ever more prominent and begun to create an image for what the business would be. One of the most important discussions for any business is developing a name that would be representative for many years to come. David knew he wanted something with a slightly deeper meaning and something that wasn’t so obvious; like “DC Productions”. Carpe Noctem, meaning “Seize the Night” in Latin came about as “Carpe Diem” was always one of David’s favourite quotes.

Once the basics of Carpe Noctem had been formed, it was just a matter of gradually building and growing the business. Of course, in March 2020, Just 2 months after setting up the business, we found ourselves in the middle of a worldwide pandemic. This was not the way we had hoped the business would start off, but making the most of a bad situation, we utilised the spare time well and began investing in new stock, tidying and improving the current stock, as well as crucial tasks like asseting stock and marketing to help Carpe Noctem grow. It’s fair to say that like the rest of the Theatre and Live Events industry, we didn’t have the best of times, but moving forward to a hopefully brighter future, we were ready and keen to work with new and existing customers once again.

As days and years go by, Our Story will continue to grow. Being faced with new challenges, opportunities, good and bad days. With constant advancements in technology and the way we work as an industry, we are excited for our future.
